Ｈｉｂワクチンについての質問に関連して、細菌性髄膜炎について少し説明します。
細菌性髄膜炎の原因になる菌の中で、一番多いものがインフルエンザ桿菌（Ｈｉｂ）と呼ばれるもので、二番目が肺炎球菌と呼ばれるものです。

細菌性髄膜炎による痙攣が始まると、一刻も早い緊急の集中治療が必要になりますが、それが可能な施設は限られています。ですから夜間や休日に痙攣が起こった場合、すぐに対応できる施設を捜すのが一苦労になります。
早期診断と早期治療によって死亡や後遺症のリスクを下げることは期待できるのですが、早期診断の困難さや集中治療の出来る病院の減少などの理由により、不幸な結果になる患者さんはむしろ増加してしまっているようです。
現在のところ唯一有効な対応策は、予防接種の普及のみです。欧米では10年以上も前からインフルエンザ桿菌（Ｈｉｂ）や肺炎球菌の予防接種が普及しているため、現在は細菌性髄膜炎が激減しています。
日本ではいまだに予防接種が始まっていないため、細菌性髄膜炎の患者さんは増加しているそうです。
Ｈｉｂワクチンの早期実施、その次に肺炎球菌ワクチンの導入が必要な理由がお分かりいただけると思います。
